A former junior at Ipswich Town and Watford, Burge signed for City in March 1966 as an 18-year-old. Over the next 10 years he was to become a huge fans favourite starring and scoring in many of the club’s memorable games during the late sixties and early seventies. Although not originally a local lad Burge himself loved the club, and certainly the fans thought of him as one of their own. He lived in the area and after his retirement he played local football for several sides. Very sadly Tony Burge died aged just 43 after a short illness. One of his playing colleagues Jackie Graham said of him “As a player he was great in the dressing room, very industrious and always got you out of trouble. He was a fearless individual and a real player’s player.” There can be few finer tributes for a true legend of the Club. Tony is the Guildford City all-time top scorer with 152 goals.
