Why are we nicknamed 'The Sweeney'?

You need some lateral thinking for this. City’s colours are red and white stripes = a barbers pole = famous barber = Sweeney Todd, the demon barber of Fleet Street.

Why are we named Guildford 'City'?

Despite having both a cathedral and a university Guildford is actually a town. When formed in 1921 the club was called Guildford United.  In 1927 the Guildford diocese came into being and there were plans announced for a cathedral. It was consequently thought that the town would gain City status, and so the club changed its name to Guildford City. Both the town’s boxing and swimming clubs similarly changed their names.
