City started with a strong starting line up despite not having Tom Penson in the squad and Joel Greaves being rested (albeit with a place on the bench). City’s recent signing from Raynes Park Vale, Austin Gacheru, started up front alongside Jack Guilford with Ben Camara taking a midfield berth.
Jaydon Gibbs started the game very strongly with some good runs at the home defence causing them all sorts of problems, Gibbs going on to leave the Vale defence in knots throughout the match.
It only took the visitors 10 minutes to open the scoring, a through ball picked up on the edge of the area by Ben Rayner saw the City midfielder surge through a static defence to slot the ball home.
Gibbs’s running continued to open up opportunities for City, with the City winger being brought down more than once in dangerous positions. City were unable to increase their lead in a one sided half until the half hour mark. A first goal of his Guildford City career for Austin Gacheru, set up by more excellent play by Jaydon Gibbs to finish confidently past Ed Cornwell in the Vale goal.
The home side’s best chance of the half came their way on 32 minutes when a header went straight into the arms of Anthony Hall.
The rest of the half was one way traffic towards the home goal, with further excellent chances coming the way of Gibbs, Jack Guilford and Dan Moody. The half time whistle then brought some relief to the beleaguered home side.
The second half started in the same vein, with Gibbs tormenting the home defence with his surging runs forward. Only some wayward finishing from City prevented further goals. The home side started to slowly get more into the game as the half wore on and the number of chances for City petered out. Hall in the City goal only had rudimentary saves to make however as Guildford’s winning run continued.
