At last week’s club AGM David Knight was appointed Chairman of Guildford City Football Club, replacing Mark Redhead who recently stepped down from the position after moving away from the area.
David originally lived in Albury and supported the original Guildford City in their final years. Subsequently David was a volunteer at Basingstoke Town FC for many years, in the process holding several senior positions. As an experienced administrator he has also served on the management boards of both The Isthmian League and The Southern League.
David said after the meeting “I look forward to helping the club to continue to improve. Much hard work has been carried out by the committee in recent years and there is a great enthusiasm around the club currently. I’m honoured to have been asked to become Chairman. As a teenager I watched most of the home games at Josephs Road in the early 1970’s right up until the final game against Folkestone in 1974. I’m looking forward to continuing the discussions with the successful youth section on how the two can work closer together to ensure a genuine pathway is available for the youth of Guildford to progress to play for the first team. At the appropriate time we’ll also continue discussions with the Council and how all parties can work together to move the club forward.” The AGM also saw the retirement of Eddie and Ros Russell. After many years at the club looking after the finances and catering respectively, both Eddie and Ros have now retired and will shortly be looking to re-locate. Both will be hugely missed by the club. Eddie and Ros, together with Mark Redhead, have been made life vice-presidents. The committee also welcomed newcomer Dylan Thomas in a marketing role, and the return of Ian Plested who will assist the media team.
