Match Report: Camberley Town v Guildford City

Guildford City continued their pre-season preparations with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Camberley Town, although the score line only tells part of the story.

City fielded a much-changed side from the team that faced Camberley’s Combined Counties rivals Epsom & Ewell the previous Tuesday, and it was the Krooners who enjoyed the better of the opening 45 minutes.

Camberley controlled much of the first half, with Guildford struggling to find any real rhythm. Clear-cut chances were few and far between, but City’s midfield and defence were kept busy as they worked hard to contain a lively Camberley attack. Despite spending long periods on the back foot, Guildford held firm and must have been relieved to go into the interval with the scores still level.

The pattern of the game changed little after the restart, although City gradually began to grow into the contest and enjoyed more possession. Goalscoring opportunities remained at a premium until the decisive moment arrived midway through the second half.

A free-kick just outside the Camberley penalty area presented City with their best opportunity of the afternoon, and [scorer to be confirmed] made no mistake, curling an excellent effort over the defensive wall and beyond the goalkeeper to give Guildford a somewhat unexpected lead.

Camberley pressed for an equaliser during the closing stages, but City’s defence produced a determined and disciplined display to preserve their advantage. With chances limited at both ends, Guildford saw out the remaining minutes to record a narrow but valuable victory and another useful workout as preparations for the new season continue.

Guildford play their final pre-season warm up match at Guildford Kings Manor school next Saturday, 1st August, when Worcester Park provide the opposition.
