The diminutive McPheat hailed from Scotland where he first played for Partick Thistle and Morton. He moved south to play for Hull City where he became known to soon-to-be City manager Haydn Green. After following Green to Guildford City, McPheat quickly became a fans favourite. A member of the 1937-38 championship side, and 1938-39 runners-upside he attracted scouts from the Football League. Plymouth Argyle offered what would have been a record fee for a Southern League player but McPheat turned the move down. After WW2 the Scotsman returned to the club although many of his appearance were in the reserves where his experience was invaluable to the younger players.
