BIOGRAPHY

Signed for City in 1937 from Tottenham Hotspur reserve side. He was to prove most probably the club’s best signing. Born in Scotland he had moved to the USA for whom he appeared in the 1930 World Cup Finals, scoring in the game against Argentina. Following the World Cup, he signed for Manchester United scoring 17 goals in 40 games. Involvement with a Players’ Union saw his career falter, and he moved on to Brentford and then Spurs. Brown’s time at City coincided with the club’s first Southern League championship, followed up the following year with a runners-up spot. Stuart Phillips in his book “The City Boys are in Town” says of Jim Brown “City had never had such a gifted and feared forward who possessed deceptive pace and a fearsome shot!”
