Guildford City continued their pre-season preparations with an entertaining 2-2 draw against Combined Counties Premier Division side Epsom & Ewell at Kings Manor School.
The two clubs know each other exceptionally well following numerous meetings over the years in the Combined Counties League, and despite the friendly status of the fixture there was certainly no shortage of intensity. Played at a high tempo from the opening whistle, the contest had all the hallmarks of a competitive league encounter rather than a pre-season warm-up, which will undoubtedly have pleased the Guildford management team.
Epsom started the stronger of the two sides and enjoyed a spell of sustained pressure during the opening stages. Their bright start was rewarded when they found the breakthrough goal, giving City an early test against higher-level opposition.
Guildford responded well and gradually worked their way back into the contest. The equaliser arrived midway through the first half and was undoubtedly the moment of the match. Spotting the Epsom goalkeeper off his line, club captain Luke Mitchell produced a piece of real quality, delicately chipping the ball from almost the halfway line and watching it sail into the net. It was a goal that was certainly appreciated by the City supporters.
The second half continued in much the same vein, with both sides playing positive attacking football and creating chances. Guildford edged in front after being awarded a penalty, which was confidently converted to make it 2-1. However, Epsom responded quickly and levelled the scores shortly afterwards, ensuring the match remained finely balanced heading into the closing stages.
Both teams pushed for a winner and there were opportunities at either end, but neither side could find the decisive goal. In truth, a 2-2 draw was probably the fairest outcome given the quality, commitment and tempo shown throughout the ninety minutes.
City’s pre-season schedule continues this weekend with another visit to Sheerwater’s impressive 3G surface at the Eastwood Centre in Woking. Awaiting them will be another familiar opponent from their Combined Counties League days, Camberley Town. Kick-off is scheduled for 12 noon as Guildford continue their preparations for the new Southern Combination League campaign.
