Guildford City 2 – 1 Three Bridges (FA Cup Preliminary Round)

Guildford City set up a trip to Tonbridge Angels with an excellent victory over a strong Three Bridges side, who were previously unbeaten in all competitions this season.

The first half finished goalless, with City missing a number of chances to take the lead.  Jaydon Gibbs was unlucky to see his penalty rebound off the post following a foul on Joel Greaves early on.  Three Bridges were even luckier to escape a red card during the incident and started to put pressure on the home side.  Joel Hughes couldn’t quite pull the trigger when through on goal, and Joel Greaves’ ball into the box was cleared following an excellent run.

It seemed that nothing was going City’s way, until just after half time when Jamie Thoroughgood nodded a free kick back across goal where Simon Cooper headed the hosts into the lead.  City were then caught on the break as Three Bridges’ Lee Carney equalised five minutes after that.  But super captain Simon Cooper scored his third of the season with an sublime strike from outside the area, which nestled into bottom corner of the Three Bridges net.
Guildford City saw out the tie with some strong defending.  This included a brilliant start by Jack Turner, who dribbled the ball out of defence seconds after coming on as a substitute.

The final whistle was greeted with cheers and applause from the City supporters as the team progressed into the next round of the FA Cup.
