Guildford City beat Chertsey 2-0 in this tight encounter at the Spectrum. In a close first half Ben Camara put the home side ahead and Joel Hughes extended the lead half way through the second half. Despite Chertsey’s endeavour it was City who finished the stronger.
The first half was an extremely tight affair, with Chertsey the better side for the first half hour. Visiting wingers O’Reagan and Moody caused particular problems and it took some determined defending to prevent them from scoring on several occasions. At the other end, Jamie Thoroughgood saw a header fly just wide of the post.
It wasn’t until the half hour mark that City began to up their tempo when Jack Guilford saw a good shot saved just before City went ahead. Ben Camara expertly controlled a cross and fired past Liam Stone in the Chertsey goal. The visitors responded but could only muster a shot from outside the area which flashed wide of the far post.
The second half continued in much the same vein with both sides competing hard. Simon Cooper went close in the 69th minute with a perfectly flighted free kick being pushed over the bar by Stone. It was from the corner that City scored their second, Joel Hughes prodding over the line from an excellent flick. The final twenty minutes of the game showed both sides fighting to gain the upper hand but City proved the stronger and held on for three points.
