City gained there first win of pre-season in prohibitively hot and humid conditions at the Middlesex Stadium on Saturday. In truth this was not one of Guildford’s finest displays, and manager Dean Thomas was frustrated at the level of performance, especially following an impressive display against Dulwich Hamlet in the week.
With several new triallists on show City were struggling to put a passing game together, and too often the defence was placed under pressure. Too often experienced midfielder Ben Walshe found himself playing in a deep position, making it difficult for him to influence the game. City did have their chances though, and from one of several breaks down the right hand side, left back Tuan West was on hand to tuck the ball home for what proved to be the only goal of the game.
With a myriad of substitutions, replacement ‘keeper Will Dukes made several crucial late saves to keep City’s noses in front, and Southall will consider themselves unlucky not to have converted at least one of their opportunities.
Audio interviews to follow shortly.
The games come thick and fast and on Tuesday evening this week City meet fellow Southern Leaguers Marlow at the Alfred Davis Ground, SL7 3ED, kick-off at 7.45pm. Support for the Lads would be welcome!
