DAVID BARRETT RIP
Guildford City Football Club is very sad to hear that former fan’s favourite David Barrett has passed away after a long battle with dementia. Dave was by common consent one of the club’s finest forwards and between 1958 and 1965 he scored 149 goals in 309 appearances. In five of his seven seasons at Joseph’s Road he finished as the team’s top scorer. Formerly an Arsenal youth player, he signed for City whilst on National Service at nearby Aldershot. The early 1960’s saw Guildford field an exceptional side, and the fans thrilled to Dave Barrett’s ball control, speed and ability in front of goal. During the summer of 1965 Barrett left for Cambridge United for a substantial sum. He was still just 25 years old and you have to wonder how many goals he would have scored had he stayed for the remainder of his career.
David’s funeral takes place in his home town of Southampton on Monday, and we send our very best wishes to Brenda and Wesley and the rest of his family. David Barrett was an exceptional footballer and will long be remembered at Guildford City FC.
