Jarvis Brook (2) 3, Guildford City (0) 1
by Barry Underwood
Following Wednesday’s midweek victory Guildford City made the long journey to Jarvis Brook confident of three points. But the hosts, who are putting together a good run themselves, had other ideas. A goal in just the third minute set the tone and as hard as City tried, they just couldn’t click into gear. It was Jarvis Brook’s day and they deservedly went on to take the points. That early goal came from a cross into the box that caused confusion enabling the loose ball to be fired home. The visitor’s struggled to make headway going forward and their best chance of the half came from Oliver Kimble’s overlapping run and cross. On 31 minutes Jarvis scored their second. Possession was lost in the middle of the park and a straight ball down the middle saw Alfie Glider go through to shoot past Jacob Slyfield. Minutes later Slyfield saved at the near post after Chidi Ajeh escaped the attention of the City defence.
Hopes of a second half recovery were thwarted somewhat by Jarvis scoring a third just two minutes after the restart; a low cross being converted at the back post. There was a danger that the score might blow out as Jacob Slyfield twice saved well. Dan Way did see a free-kick curl over the bar, but chances were otherwise limited. It changed on 78 minutes when Luke Mitchell was fouled in the box and Harry Hennem stepped up to convert the penalty. The home side then hit the post but thereafter it was all Guildford. There were strong shouts for a further penalty that came to nothing. Harry Hennem’s powerful low cross was missed in the box by Tyreke Martin, and seconds later from another Hennem cross George Bamgboye headed against the crossbar. Ruben Correia saw a free kick just clear the crossbar but in truth it was too little too late.
