Guildford City 2 – 5 Molesey

Guildford City Football Club Combined Counties League Premier ChampionsMolesey spoiled Guildford City’s trophy presentation day with a ruthless display in front of goal. Molesey became the first side to score five league goals at the Spectrum since February 2009 and ensured that it wasn’t just the rain putting a dampener on the home side’s celebrations.

After an incredible effort from Kev P, Matt, Matt, Brian, Shirley, Dave and Martin the pitch was deemed fit to play – but perhaps City would have been wishing they hadn’t have bothered come full time!

It looked good for City early on when an opening spell of dominance put them two ahead – Luke Bradnick’s deflected shot and Dan Moody’s penalty (which also earned him the golden boot) putting the home side into the lead.  But three goals in a nightmarish seven minutes for City put the visitors in the ascendancy. James McShane and Joe Grant netted within minutes of each other because the former bagged a third for Molesey with a flighted free kick into the top corner. With skipper Simon Cooper also going off injured, City’s prospects looked bleak.

In the second half the hosts saw Will Heavey sent off for a second booking and, with Luke Elliott tucking away a 67th minute penalty, the chances of a triumphant end to the season were scuppered. The final blow came on 83 minutes, when Michael Hall picked up a second caution for bringing McShane down on his way to goal.  Dan Moody stepped in to spend the last few minutes of the season in goal but was powerless to prevent McShane sealing his hat-trick and a fifth goal for the visitors.
