City were completely blown away in the second round of the Surrey Senior Cup, losing 5-1 to Chipstead at the Spectrum. Goals came from Shane Graham, Shaun Preddie, Dwayne Antonio and a brace from Ashley Lodge, with Dan Moody’s sublime effort nothing more than a consolation on his 100th appearance for the club.
Forty-two spectators wrapped up for the freezing conditions to watch the match; witnessing Guildford’s second worst defeat of the season. It was a tetchy opening, and alarm bells were ringing for Guildford after the first minute as Ashley Lodge found himself with time to control in the six-yard box, he should have finished first time but took a touch to compose himself allowing Jamie Thoroughgood to recover and block his shot.
Guildford’s first opportunity came in the fifteenth minute as new-boy Scott Elgar, making his first start in his current spell with the club, fired over under pressure. He received the ball after Thoroughgood won an aerial dual at the back post from Moody’s free kick, Elgar however, was closed down quickly and was unable to steady himself before striking.
Shane Graham opened the scoring after 25 minutes with a simple finish past Mike Hall, deputising in goal for brother Antony. Dwayne Antonio beat the offside trap and received the ball in-behind Elvis Defreitas before taking on Throughgood and sliding the ball into Graham who, unmarked, picked his spot.
Tommy Tydeman, hunting for an equaliser, hit a good long-range effort low and hard to the keeper’s right, Martin Grant got down to his post well though, and pushed it out for a corner. An Equaliser did come for City not long after, the ball looped up and an exquisite first touch to control from Moody, set himself before he flicked the ball round the defender and struck past the keeper. In his 99 games previous for the club he will not have scored a finer goal.
Guildford were only level for a matter of seconds though, as Antonio burst down the right hand side, taking on left back Dammy Bada, and finishing past Hall to make it 2-1.
It was three five minutes later, as Antonio, causing problems again down the right hand side, delivered for Ashley Lodge, who found himself unmarked on the edge of the box and struck beyond Hall.
Moments before the half time whistle Junior Kaffo was offered the opportunity to reduce the deficit for Guildford with a free kick from 25 yards, his effort went close and looked to be tipped over but a goal kick was given.
Chipstead added to their lead just five minutes into the second half with a header from Shaun Preddie, ending any hopes Kevin Rayner’s men had of getting back into the fixture.
Lodge rounded the scoring off on the 71st minute, with his second, making it 5-1, Hendrie drove down the right, into the penalty area, and delivered to the back post. Lodge dispatched the shot, finishing what was a miserable night for the home side.
In truth it could have been even worse for Guildford, whose high line was troubled far too often by Chipstead’s nippy attack. Three defeats in a row now for Guildford leaves Kevin Rayner with some thinking to do before their next match away at Daventry Town on Saturday, where victory could send them back to the top of the division but defeat could see them dropping out of the play off zone.
