Guildford City (0) 0, Wimborne Town (1) 3
A 10 man Guildford City were comprehensively beaten at The Spectrum on Wednesday night against a powerful Wimborne Town. Previously undefeated in their last four home matches, City unfortunately couldn’t continue this impressive run and found it hard to break down the solid Dorset outfit.
The first chance of the game fell to the visitors when Jamie Davidson found himself within close range of the target, however he scuffed his shot over the bar. The opening exchanges saw long balls being fed up to Joel Greaves and Lance Banton-Brown, but Wimborne’s defence was resilient when City managed to get forward.
The visitors then had another chance to take an early lead in emphatic style when Jon Blake found space to shoot from 25 yards but his spectacular shot was tipped over the bar by Antony Hall. But this spurred Wimborne on who opened the scoring with fifteen minutes played. A 20 yard ball from Sam Griffin flew over the top of Guildford’s defence, falling to Mark Gamble who slotted the ball past Antony Hall and into the net.
Wimborne continued to dominate the first half with the majority of possession and chances. A loose ball eventually found James Stokoe but his shot was blocked from 10 yards, before captain Scott Arnold’s long range effort was palmed away for a corner. The first half slowed down in terms of chances towards the end of the first period, however a blow for Guildford came right on the 45 minute mark where Jamie Thoroughgood was somewhat unluckily shown a red card after a tackle on the last man just outside the area.

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first, as the visitor’s had many chances to capitalise on their one goal and man advantage. Mark Gamble had a chance to add his second from close range, but the shot was blocked before James Stokoe couldn’t finish the rebound.
Guildford started to grow into the game as the half went on as Lance Banton-Brown’s high cross was good enough to test ‘keeper Jason Harvell, before a free kick from Dammy Bada was glanced by Tom Penson straight into Harvell’s arms. But it was Wimborne who scored the game’s second with 56 minutes played as Jamie Davidson finished from close range after the ball ricocheted off Guildford’s defence and into his path.
Wimborne then added their third in the 71stminute as Matt Kemble, who had barely been on the pitch for a minute, met George Webb’s cross with a header that nestled in the corner of the net. The impact sub could have put the game to bed soon after but his shot blazed over Hall’s bar. Jack Guilford had the chance to reduce the deficit towards the closing stages but his two low shots were not powerful enough to cause an impact.
Guildford’s players played with their hearts but just couldn’t find a way through a strong Wimborne side who travelled back to Dorset with all three points.
