City open their pre-season programme with defeat against impressive Loxwood

After a number of training sessions “running the hard yards”, Guildford City’s players returned to match action on the 3G at Ash manor last evening. Loxwood from the newly named Southern Combination League were the visitors for City’s opening pre-season friendly, and the visitors certainly provided a suitably stiff challenge for a City side fielding a number of new faces and triallists.

Loxwood who opened their own pre-season campaign impressively against Ryman Premier side Burgess Hill Town on Saturday looked a good side, as shown by their sixth place finish last season. Indeed the visitors had netted within minutes of the start and City were second best for the first half hour. However the first of a rash of substitutions changed the momentum and Guildford started in earnest to threaten the Loxwood goal. In the end a cohesive Loxwood returned to Sussex with a 3-0 victory but City manager Don Chislett will have been satisfied with a number of areas of the performance and with a further eight pre-season games to go Guildford are sure to be ready for the big kick-off on 8 August.

Guildford City’s interviewer Ian Plested got the thoughts of new Assistant Manager Stuart Searle after the match, you can listen to the interview here.

City are next in pre-season action this Saturday when they are at “home” to Southern League side, North Greenford United, kick-off 3pm at the Mytchett Centre, GU16 6AA. There is plenty of parking and the bar will be open!
