The Sweeney assembled on Saturday evening at the Woodbridge Hill Social Club for Guildford City’s annual presentation evening. Guest of honour for the evening was former City hero Colin Harris who had made 226 appearances for the club between 1970 – 74. The tough tackling defender played a key role in Guildford’s promotion season in 1970-71, and also in the FA Cup run that culminated at Gay Meadow against Shrewsbury Town. Colin was presented with a copy of Stuart Phillip’s book “The City Boys are in Town”. Tom Hudson’s interview with Colin Harris can be found below.
Dan Stewart impressively walked away with four awards, namely Supporters’ Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year, Top Goal scorer (with 27) and Goal of the Season. Jordan Gallagher had been in the frame for the “Best goal” award after two fantastic long range efforts during March. Remarkably though Dan Stewart claimed the award in the last minute of the last game of the season with an incredible curling effort against Godalming Town. Jordan Gallagher deservedly gained some compensation by seeing off stiff competition to claim the Young Player of the Year award, whilst Chris Tancock was rewarded for an impressive season by being named Manager’s Player of the Season.
There were awards also for non-playing personnel. Emma Miller was a popular winner of the Club Person of the Year, whilst Tom Hudson, Martin McCormack, Derek Russell and Derek Tucker were awarded Unsung Hero awards for their voluntary efforts on match days.
After the presentation evening Guildford City’s 2017-18 season has now concluded. Announcements relating to pre-season friendlies and Early-Bird Season tickets will be made later this week.
