Guildford City produced a fine display to see off local rivals Ash United. Joel Hughes got City off to a great start when he headed them into the lead, with Jack Guilford doubling it just after the half hour mark. Ash came into the game more in the second half, but were restricted to a single effort on goal. Substitute Austin Gacheru put a gloss on the result with two late goals for the visitors.
City laid on chance after chance throughout this match, denied only by a busy Ash goalkeeper. The resilience was broken twice in either half, first when Hughes nodded home in the 13th minute and then when Guilford rose highest to meet Dan Moody’s pinpoint corner kick in the 33rd.
The second half saw more of the same, although for a while the hosts held possession well without creating any clear cut chances. With just a two goal lead, a goal for the home side could have changed the perspective of the game considerably but with 7 minutes to play, Gacheru slotted home the third to seal the points for City. He made it four with his second goal in the 89th – the two goals a fitting celebration to the birth of his baby daughter last week.
The top of the table remains tight however, with Windsor and Hanworth Villa both earning 1-0 victories. Guildford City will be looking to make amends for their only league defeat of the season when they face Colliers Wood United, in the return match of their meeting last month, on Wednesday.
