Guildford City 4 CB Hounslow United 3: Match Report

09/03/2019 Guildford City v CB Hounslow at Westfield

Captain Nemo Adams opens the scoring.

Guildford City (2) 4, CB Hounslow United (0) 3
by Harry Vidgen

Guildford started this game well on top, clearly re-energised after their win in midweek. In just the first minute, Billy Irving took a throw in and found Kyen Nicholas in the box but his shot was blocked. Luke Beale then tried his luck but his shot was also blocked as the Hounslow United defence scrambled to clear their lines. Guildford then went in front just three minutes in. Kiye Martin stepped up to take the corner and whipped it in and Nemo Adams met it with a brilliantly timed volley that nestled into the bottom left corner of the Hounslow net; a brilliant start to the match for Nemo on his return from suspension. Guildford continued to dominate proceedings and in the 14th minute, they went further in front thanks to a brilliant bit of skill. Once again it was from a set piece as Kiye Martin took the corner kick once again. It fell to Kyen Nicholas in the centre of the box who produced a moment of magic and back-heeled it past the Hounslow keeper and into the back of the net to double Guildford’s lead. Unfortunately, a few minutes later, Kyen Nicholas went off injured clutching his hamstring and was replaced by Tom Griffin. There was a bizarre incident just before half time where the Hounslow keeper nearly scored after his long goal kick caught Luke Beale off-guard, and the bouncing ball was only just tipped over his own bar by Stuart Norman. On 43 minutes Billy Irving became the second casualty of the game limping off with a knee injury and being replaced by Dominic Easton.

Hounslow looked a different side after the restart and came flying out the traps. They had a few shooting opportunities early on in the second half but were all well saved by Stuart Norman. However, in the 56th minute, Hounslow reduced the deficit. Hounslow’s Skapetis drove into the box and shot, his effort was saved by Stuart Norman but he parried it into the path of Gavin Bamford who put in the rebound. Guildford seemed to be rattled and Hounslow soon drew level as in the 60th minute Gavin Bamford got his second goal of the game as he fired in from the right hand side of the box. The tide seemed to have changed in Hounslow United’s favour but then out of the blue, Tom Griffin was bundled over in the box and a penalty was awarded to Guildford. Benga Ogunseye stepped up and confidently dispatched the ball into the bottom corner of the net. But there would be another twist in the tale as straight after Guildford’s third goal, Hounslow were awarded their own penalty as Sean Mason bundled straight into the back of an opposing player. Hounslow’s Wayne Ridgeley then stepped up and converted from the spot. Unbelievably, in the 84th minute Guildford piled men forward and Benga Ogunseye was put through down the right, his floated cross went straight through the keeper’s hands and Tom Griffin stooped low at the far post to head it in for the winning goal. An extremely eventful game, that fortunately ended well for Guildford City.
