Pre-Season Progress

We are now two weeks into pre-season with training and pre-season friendlies in full swing. Training started slowly due to holidays and work commitments but now good numbers are being seen at our new pre-season base. Last Saturday, within days of commencing training, we faced our old rivals in the first of our pre-season matches. Several late withdrawals saw City field just 11 players of whom two were goalkeepers. It was no real surprise that so early in our pre-season schedule and lacking numbers we fell to an 8-1 defeat. The fact that Antony Hall, playing up front in the second half, scored our goal says much for the availability of players on the day. Kevin Rayner has never worried about score lines during pre-season, but credit Ash United who did look fit and well organised.

This Saturday in another match played on an artificial surface, City faced CCL Division One club Staines Lammas. On a very hot day drinks breaks were taken midway through each half. With a squad of 16, City played some enterprising football at times. Defensively there were some moments to work on but Kev Rayner later professed himself very pleased with the workout. The final score was 8-4 in Guildford’s favour with the goals coming from Sam Spencer (2), Ryan Wallis (2), Jordan Taylor, Tyler Chambers, Nuno Pereira and Anthony Baker.

Supporters might like to know that a number of familiar faces have signed again for the coming season including: Anthony Bridgeman, Elvis Defreitas, Antony Hall, Aaron Hennessy, Casey McCabe, Bruce McPhail, Nuno Pereira, Ben Rayner, Sam Spencer, Jordan Taylor, Scott Todd, Graham Tydeman and Ryan Wallis.

There are also a number of new additions to the squad including: Anthony Baker, a former Swansea City academy midfield player or striker, Tyler Chambers, a 21 year old striker from Chessington & Hook, Ezra Nelson, a left sided player who is returning to the game after a two year break, David Unwin, a former Guildford City juniors defender, and Navid Zandi, a former Barnet U’19 player who is a student at the University of Surrey.

A handful of other signings can be expected.
