Preseason friendlies – Reports

Badshot Lea 3, Guildford City 2

In furnace like weather conditions City concluded a weekend of pre-season football by losing out by the odd goal in five against Badshot Lea; a repeat of the score line against Farnham the previous evening. Playing with just three players who had started the previous evening, City played in an entertaining style, whilst on occasions looking a little uncomfortable at the back.

Badshot Lea opened the scoring on 16 minutes when a long range effort thudded against the post, and the rebound was comfortably converted. On 36 minutes Badshot Lea went two up with a delicately lobbed finish.

The second half saw City take the game to their CCL rivals. On 55 minutes triallist Jeremy Funer appeared at the far post to tuck home a low cross. Shortly afterwards fellow triallist Kobe Botwe picked up a loose ball on the edge of the box to drill a low shot into the corner of the net for the equalising goal. With just seconds to go Badshot Lea, in a rare foray forward, fired home a powerful shot from just outside the box to clinch victory.

Team: Aaron Bufton, James Treherne, Mike Woods (Navid Zandi), Darren Evans (Ryan Mitchell), David Unwin (Bruce McPhail), Barry Gooden, Tyrone Roberts (James Ryan), Jeremy Funer (Victor Donkar), Julian Amoruso (Ryan Wallis), Calvin Thomas (Kieran Burrell), Nathan Davis (Kobe Botwe).

Farnham Town 3, Guildford City 2

City opened their pre-season campaign by going down 3-2 in an entertaining game against Farnham Town on Friday evening. With only two players remaining from last season’s squad it will take time for Dean Thomas’s new look side to gel, but from what we saw tonight we could be witnessing the beginnings of a highly entertaining footballing side.

Farnham opened the scoring on the quarter hour when they broke free of the defence to shoot home from 20 yards. Farnham slid home their second just prior to the interval, and City, who had displayed some fine approach play, were somewhat unlucky to be two goals down at the interval.

City got themselves back in the game in the second period when triallist Darren Evans disposed the Farnham defence to hit a rasping 20 yard shot past the home keeper. Late in the game both sides added headed goals; City’s coming when Ryan Bernard in the last minute, converting powerfully from a corner.

All in all a satisfactory and entertaining opening encounter.

Team: Aaron Bufton (Will Duke), Bruce McPhail, Lucas Leon (David Unwin), Matthew King (James Ryan), Tom Mudge, Ryan Bernard, Navid Zandi (Nathan Davis), Ben Walshe, Andrew Dalhouse, Scott Fitzsimmons (Darren Evans), Mike Woods (Tyrone Roberts).

Ian Plested’s post-match interviews with Dean Thomas and Aaron Bufton will appear on this site shortly.
