Hanworth Villa 1 – 2 Guildford City

Guildford City came away with a victory from this exciting match, becoming the first club to take points at Hanworth Villa this season.  The visitors looked bright early on but soon found themselves under long spells of Hanworth pressure.  City always looked dangerous on the break however, and it was from one of these that they opened the scoring.  In the 24th minute, Tony Chaplin fed Dan Moody whose shot was palmed into the path of Austin Gacheru.  While Villa were creating chances, they found Antony Hall and the Guildford defence in fine form.

In the second half Guildford City began to exert themselves on the hosts, and doubled their lead on 64 minutes when Dan Moody nicked the ball past goalkeeper Terry Buss before calmly slotting home.  It could have been game over shortly afterwards but Austin Gacheru’s fine shot cannoned back off the crossbar.  The home side still looked positive and threatening upfront but couldn’t find a way past Hall and began to show gaps in the midfield as they pressed to get back in the match.  An injury to referee Andrew Connor meant plenty of stoppage time and Hanworth clawed a goal back through Levi King in the 93rd minute.  Guildford City (or ‘the Guilds’ as they were bizarrely referred to in this Windsor Observer article!) clung on despite squandering a chance to bury the match through Martin Debrah – and then gifting the hosts a last minute chance to level.  Goalkeeper Antony Hall held on to the ball too long but the resulting free kick (in the box) was eventually smashed high over the bar.
