Guildford City 1 – 1 Mole Valley SCR

Guildford City had a frustrating afternoon against a well drilled Mole Valley SCR side, whose performance suggested that they will not stay in their current position at the bottom of the league for long.  A penalty from ex-City winger Danny Elgar put the visitors in front on 24 minutes.  Austin Gacheru continued his scoring form, equalising for City on 35 minutes.

During the game, in which City had numerous chances but never really tested Leigh Bowden in the Mole Valley goal, the visitors allowed the league leaders barely any time on the ball in the final third. While City found themselves with time and space in midfield at times, Mole Valley’s defending was determined and resolute.  A pattern of frustrated and somewhat lacklustre City attacks emerged, with the occasional worrying breakaway at the other end that was quickly dealt with.  If only City had someone like Jack Guilford to spice up the attack! (He told me to write that)

The two goals came within ten minutes of each other.  First, Danny Elgar converted a spot kick after an apparent trip in the penalty area, while Austin Gacheru did well to fire home for City minutes later.  It seemed like City’s pressure would eventually tell, but a visiting side defending in numbers ensured that they only ever really had half chances.

Ultimately this was a well deserved point for a hard working Mole Valley SCR while Guildford will point to an off-par performance as a reason for two dropped points.
