HB, from the Faroe Islands, have been struggling in the league but a welcome distraction came in the form of a Champions League second qualifying round tie with Malmö FF from Sweden. The Faroese champions travelled to Sweden for the first leg and were, unsurprisingly, beaten – although the 2-0 margin was a very valiant effort.
They fared much better on home soil (well, 3G soil at least) and held out to go in goalless at half time. Better was to come when captain Fróði Benjaminsen nodded home a free kick on 71 minutes to give halve the deficit. But Brazilian centre forward Wilton Figueiredo dashed all hopes of taking the tie to extra time when he found the net with a powerful strike late on.
So while HB exit the competition after a 3-1 aggregate defeat, it shows signs of progress for Faroese football. Earlier in the season, NSÍ Runavík held a strong Fulham line-up to a goalless draw on the islands – albeit following a 3-0 defeat at Craven Cottage.
