Guildford City 4 – 3 Moneyfields (FA Vase Third Round)

Guildford City progressed to the Fourth Round in this entertaining, if niggly, match at the Spectrum.Moneyfields looked the sharper from the start, hitting a rusty Guildford City defence regularly on the break.  It was no surprise when the visitors took the lead in the 16th minute, Warren Hunt seeing his shot deflected wickedly past the helpless Antony Hall.

Their lead lasted just ten minutes however, when an inch perfect Hughes cross was met by Greaves at the far post, who slid home to level the scores.

The half ended with two more goals.  First, Moneyfields’ Jamie Hore finished impressively before Jack Guilford saw his header beat Dave Hook in the Money goal.

The hosts started much more brightly in the second period, with Joel Hughes ending his recent goal drought in style.  His pace beat two defenders, before finishing smartly past Hook.  City’s chances looked even better when Money’s Guy Rutherford was sent off for a second caution after a collision with Simon Cooper.

However, this sparked Moneyfields into action, with City leaving gaping holes in the midfield while defending deeply.  The inevitable happened in the 65th minute, when goalkeeper Antony Hall brought down an oncoming striker.  Warren Hunt converted from the spot to make the score 3-3.

Guildford City made their man advantage count when Joel Hughes headed home from close range with a little under fifteen minutes remaining.

The final whistle was greeted by cheers from the gathered Guildford City contingent, while Moneyfields’ aggrieved supporters turned their frustrations towards the referee in an ugly and unnecessary end to the afternoon.
